But as I get older and wiser :) I come to realize the internet is not always as efficient or effective as it seems.

A lot of the tools on the internet like socialmedia, apps and cloudbased stuff that is supposed to make your life easier, (easier for you to communicate, network, save and share) will eventually leave you with just more work and more things to do. It doesn’t make your life easier, it makes it busier.

So I decided to quit facebook, quit twitter, quit saving my stuff online. Back to simplifying. And you know what? It feels great! Back to playing guitar and spending quality time with the family. That’s all there is to it.

Okay I could dive a little deeper and talk about those nice late morning cappuccinos, how I spend my days with coolest guitar workouts and that kind of stuff, but I’ll save that for later posts. Patience… please!

And then I also decided to give up goals. Meaning: Learning a certain skill or working on a project (how small it may be) with a deadline in mind. No more of that. Nowadays I wake up and just do whatever comes my way and do it passionately and mindfully. With the emphasis on “mindfully”.

That doesn’t mean I don’t have a saying in how I spend my days, I certainly do, but my days flow more naturally and best of all…. I get more done without having the intention to do so. Try it and you’ll be pretty amazed. Just live in the moment and be open and openminded for whatever or whoever shows up on your path. You’ll come out as a better guitar player because of it.

I’ll leave you for now with a beautiful quote by Lao Tzu:
“The world is ruled by letting things take their course, it cannot be ruled by interfering.”

We took our travel guitars with us and we had such a blast.

In the evening we jammed together in the front garden of our apartment while drinking Italian wine.

At noon I would sometimes go to the beach on my own (My zen moment), sitting down on a rock with my feet in perfect water playing my favorite Jack Johnson, John Mayer and Damien Rice songs. The sun burning on my skin and a tremendous view of the lake and the mountains. Just euphoric.

It was just great to have our travel guitars with us wherever we went.

At home I’m also totally head over heels in love with my travel guitar. I don’t know, but there is just something about it that wants you to play it all the time.

But then again, maybe I do know…

Let’s take a look at some benefits I think are really interesting:

Comfort
First off, a travel guitar feels really nice and smooth in your hands. It’s light and easy to handle whatever situation you are in.

It’s perfect for playing guitar on a chair with armrests or any other guitar unfriendly sitting object and it’s great for adults as well as children.

Flexibility
It’s all in the name. The travel guitar is perfect for travel. It takes up almost no storage space. No excuses anymore to not take your guitar with you on a holiday when you’re going by car, plane, bike or walking. It’s just no trouble bringing your guitar along with you. You won’t even notice it’s there.

Just take it to the beach, a friends house, a party, a family visit, a romantic night out, the park or some other place where you just want to chill or hang out. Life gets more interesting.

Small spaces (a car, a tent, a dressing room before a gig) or places where you don’t want your guitar to attract too much attention (maybe your job or school) are perfectly suited for your travel companion. Convenient situations arise by themselves once you start using your travel guitar.

Freedom
A travel guitar gives you a sense of freedom, ability and independency. You’ll notice it the moment you walk the streets carrying it with you easily on your shoulders. You’ll feel free!

If necessary or if you would want to you could travel the world making money performing on the streets, teaching guitar, connecting and networking with fellow musicians and other interesting people, playing gigs and sharing music everywhere. Totally independent. For many musicians the sky is the limit.

Efficiency
How much time is lost in life just by waiting. Waiting on friends or colleagues, in stationary traffic, on a plane, waiting for just about anything. Your travel guitar is the perfect companion to occupy your time.

Isn’t it great to have that extra time to run through those scales or that cool riff you just learned. Now you can use your precious time efficiently and having fun at the same time.

Tip:
It makes all the difference in the world to look for a quality travel guitar that feels smooth and comfortable in your hands and sounds really good to your ears. May I say, the Taylor Baby travel guitar is a good recommendation. (I’m not endorsing this product whatsoever.) Obviously that’s what makes you want to play it 24/7.

Now go and conquer the world!

Be cool and share it on Stumbleupon.

Thanks, Klaus

Since I’ve become a simplifier life has become pretty awesome. Things have become better, easier and more beautiful.

Now there is time to do everything I want and I’m doing all of the things I always wanted to do:

Playing guitar, teaching fabulous guitar students and meeting interesting people, working out (at the moment: abs training, push ups, jump rope, walking), reading or writing and spending time with family and friends.

And I ain’t doing all of these things every single day. I’m taking my time.

In the past I always wanted to do a lot more, but now I’m limiting myself to a small number of things (the most important ones). I have let go of a lot of unimportant things and it has made life simply beautiful.

I’m focusing on things I really want to do and not so much on what I want to achieve. You’ll be amazed how things change for the better when you start to let go and live in the now.

If you want to enjoy more with less here are some ways to go about it:

1 – Get rid of stuff
Yes you heard it. Get rid of all the stuff you haven’t used within a year or better yet within the last six months. Get rid of stuff that is taking hold of your time, stuff that distracts you, stuff that is filling your precious space, stuff you regularly need to clean, maintain, move around or even repair but don’t really need.

Give your stuff away to family, friends or charity and you will feel good about it.

Get rid of excuses and only keep the most important things which you enjoy on a regular basis. A clean space is the best space to focus, be inspired and enjoy the things you love most. Less stuff equals more time. More time to make music.

2 – Enjoy the journey
The things you do in life, where you do it and how you do it, is the path you walk and the journey you travel. Make sure you love what you do instead of aiming for a dream goal without enjoying the path you walk on.

If you want to become a great songwriter enjoy the learning process of writing and creating. If you want to become a professional artist then enjoy performing for small audiences first and find passion in practice and improving. Find the challenge in overcoming obstacles and keep the fun alive.

Be mindful of this every single day. Don’t lose the path out of sight. If you just focus on achieving and on arriving at your destination you’ll forget to enjoy the wonderful moments of your journey which is what life is all about.

3 – Buy less
Stop spending time on buying and buying some more. Forget about the latest updates and upgrades on recording software or the latest plugins and figuring out how to make it all work. You really don’t need more and more. Stop adding more pedals and more guitars to your setup. Keep your guitar gear simple and minimalist. It’s saves you time and money.

Instead do something creative like improving your guitar skills or writing songs. Stop buying start creating.

4 – Do less
See more, gain more and learn more by doing less. Focusing on less makes life peaceful and more meaningful. You don’t need to read about everything, be everywhere, participate in everything, see and please everyone to find contentment or happiness.

Doing less means a deeper insight and more quality time for the most important things. More freedom and more spontaneity in your musical life.

Enjoy!

I get excited and want to do better in the next year, always looking for a new challenge.

I also evaluate what I have accomplished, experienced or how much I have grown.

I can look back with awesomeness.

In May my son Vince was born (he is really into guitars already), I spend more time practicing guitar and learned a lot of new stuff, Guitarhabits has grown rapidly and I really love the feedback I got from everybody, I started a new blog about simplicity, reduced and downsized a lot of my stuff, I have become an early riser (I wake up at 5 am) and enjoy teaching guitar as a profession at home.

This year I want to spent less time on the internet, simplify more and worry less about achieving goals.

I want to focus mainly on teaching and practicing guitar, Guitarhabits, meditation, running/walking and spending time with my family.

For those who are new to the blog I hear you, what’s up with all that simplifying stuff Klaus?

Well here’s how you can make great use of this simplifying stuff and stick to your new years guitar resolutions:

Downsize your goals
Choose as few goals as possible. For some people it’s the hardest thing to do. If you have too many goals you will lose focus and it will be at the expense of your most important goal. Concentrate on the most important one. Downsizing your goals makes life easier, more productive and more fun.

Reduce your stuff
Getting rid of stuff makes you realize what is truly important, it will save you time in maintenance, repairs, moving it around and being distracted by it.
Reduce your stuff, use what is really important and make the most of it.

Eliminate and clear distractions
Limit the constant supply and access to digital data. Reduce the time you spent looking at a screen. Make less use of Twitter, Facebook and surfing around the net. Notice how much it occupies your precious time.

Eliminate emails by unsubscribing to advertisement, use spamfilters, respond with shorter emails or try not to respond at all. Clear every possible distraction that keeps you from
realizing your dream goal or following your true passion. Turn of the TV, your Ipad, Iphone or Iwhatever.

Focus on learning and creating.

Keep simplifying
Simplifying is an ongoing process. With every step you take to simplify you’ll reap the benefits and you will experience how it will enhance your life.

Keep thinking about how you can simplify more. More simplifying means more time to play guitar and listening to music.

Thanks and cheers to a new year!

I was ecstatic. I said: “Yes of course, great, awesome!”

We met a few days later to talk about stuff like what kind of music we wanted to play, what our goal would be, how many gigs we wanted to play, where to rehearse, etc.

I was thrilled, but at the same time confused. I was in a dilemma.

The picture of me playing with those great musicians playing great music was awesome, but somehow it didn’t feel right. I was doubting and I was restless. I decided to let it rest for a while and leave it up to the universe.

I went through all the different scenarios in my head, the pros and cons and I still couldn’t figure it out.

I called him back and we talked for an hour and a half figuring out what was troubling me and we had a really great conversation. It helped me a lot, but still I couldn’t decide what to do.

I threw the dilemma back into the sky and after a week of going back and forth the answer slowly grew on me. In fact, I think the answer was already clear from the beginning, but I just didn’t want to see it or I didn’t want to believe it.

This wasn’t the time for me to start a new band.

I was in another stage of life. I realized I was already living a happy life. I was following my passions and busy with new goals.

Being a 33 year old guitar player and songwriter who had just took a break from his own band a year ago, playing in bands nonstop from the age of 13 and professionally from age 21, now a self employed guitar teacher working from home, a husband and dad of two kids with the ages of 2 and 5 months old, writer of two blogs (Guitar Habits and Simplify Your Day), still improving my guitar playing on a regurarly basis, a lifehacker trying to simplify, enjoying the freedom and good life it was clear that I already knew the answer.

Sometimes it’s good to take a break from playing gigs or other musical projects in your life. It’s good to be honest with yourself.

Do you feel you’re in some kind of musical dilemma, here are the keys that made it 100% clear to me:

Keep your heart above your head.
Listen to your heart when your mind leaves you confused.

If you feel fear but your heart is in love, listen to your heart. If your mind is in doubt but your heart is sure, listen to your heart.

Note: Be sure who is telling you what. Sometimes you think your heart is speaking but it might as well be your mind. Feel what is real.

Talk
Talk to people who really know you but at the same time can have an objective opinion. Don’t let them convince you, just let them talk and hear them out. Call every person you feel you need to talk to.

Leave it alone
Let your dilemma or questions rest for a while. Just leave it up to the universe. You will get an answer in time if you’ll trust on it, but be patient.

The little voice behind the little voice
A good friend of mine told me this once and it helped me out many times.

For good reasons we listen to the little voice inside our heads for a true answer. But sometimes we’re still not sure if this little voice speaks the truth. At this point listen to the little voice behind the little voice in the back of your head to find out the real truth. Try it out!

Do what you wanna do, be who you wanna be.
Do what you really want. Don’t be a fake. Don’t be someone who others want or expect you to be. Don’t try to compete. Live your own true life. Find your own path.

Play, write, sing and perform the music you love even if it is not considered as cool. There is an audience for everyone out there.

Live your life as a musician in your own way. Life changes and so do you. You might not want to be the things you wanted when you were younger. Let go of entrenched views.

You grow, you become wiser (hopefully), your taste becomes more varied, your view on life expands and life circumstances change. That’s a good thing.

Live the life you wanna live now and know you can change it anytime.

When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be. – Lao Tzu

Sunrise in Machu Picchu by thecsman
Since a year now I have been waking up early. Going from 6 a.m to 5 a.m. My life has changed because of it.

Finally I have the time to do everything that I love to do: practicing guitar, running my business, writing a blog, writing songs, working out, reading, spending a lot of time with my wife and children.

It’s the greatest reward and reminder for waking up early.

I wake up early at least 5 days a week. I like to wake up early two or three days in a row and then one day sleep late. (7.30 a.m.) At night I go to bed at 11 p.m. Not a minute later. If I go to bed at 12 p.m. and try to wake up early it won’t work. I tried many different ways and figured out the one that worked best for me. I think this is different for everyone so you have to experiment with this.

Originally I am a night owl and waking up early is not something that came naturally for me, but it has become a habit and it’s the best thing ever!

Here are the 8 tips that do work:

1 – The reason
You got to have a reason to wake up early or else you won’t do it. The reason can be a goal. Before you go to bed, write down the steps you will take the next morning to achieve a part of that goal. Make sure it’s a goal you really want to accomplish. It has to be something you are passionate and excited about.

2 – Early enough
Set the alarm early enough so you can really get some work done. If you wake up only 15 minutes earlier and it’s too less time to accomplish anything you won’t stick with it. Wake up a half an hour, one hour or two hours earlier. Gradually increase your wake up time.

3 – Go to bed
Let’s be honest, you won’t get any smarter by watching TV. It won’t realize your dream goal. Just go te bed in time. You can do without those late night talk shows or crime scene investigation series. Be smart. Waking up early is much more fulfilling.

4 – Stop thinking
The moment your alarm goes off you’re are giving yourself a hundred reasons against one or two to get back to sleep. Stop your thinking the very right moment you wake up. Just step out of bed. Don’t you dare talk to yourself. Don’t go into a discussion. You will lose if you will. Don’t go for the short term benefits, but go for the long term benefits that will change for life. People who give in to the short term benefits won’t get their dream goals accomplished.

5 – Mantra
If you do get trapped into thinking, speak out your mantra. Create a mantra for yourself to make sure you wake up early. The Mantra should contain a few keywords to define the reasons why you want to wake up early.

One of the reasons could be is to get some work done. If you have children it’s really difficult to get any work done. So this is your private time in total solitude. Your most productive time of the day. The Mantra keywords could be “private time”, “productiveness”.

6 – Accountability
Talk to people about your waking up early system and which goals you have accomplished or are busy accomplishing. The more people you talk to about it, the more accountable you feel to practice what you preach.

7 – Rewarding
You can reward yourself for waking up early, but the best reward is to be productive and focused on your goal. Get away from distractions (internet, mobile phones, TV, newspapers, etc) and just go for what you want to achieve. The feeling of accomplishment after you worked hard on your goal in the morning is the best reward ever. Try it and you will see.

8 – The Habit
It takes 3 to 4 weeks to create a habit. If you tried a few times but failed here and there, don’t beat yourself up about it. Just try again. You just need to make it through the 3 weeks. By this time you created a habit. Now you are in it for the long term. You’ll have the best time ever!

The room where you spent most of your time is of great importance to your playing.

I have noticed that when I put my electric guitar in the living room I tend to play more solos, riffs and licks.

When I put my acoustic guitar in the room I will play more fingerpicking style, blues licks or try to figure out nice chord changes.

Writing songs is something I am also more likely to do on an acoustic guitar.

Our busy “need to get things done” society has such a major impact on our lives, there might be times where your guitar doesn’t see the light of day. When your guitar is not right in front of you in those busy times, it is possible that it doesn’t occur to you to play at all.

A great way to change this awful situation is to design the room you play in. Your room must breath music, inspire you and make you want to pick up that guitar every time you are there.

Here are 5 keys to make this thing work:

1 – Declutter
Make sure you get rid of everything you don’t need or haven’t used in a period of time.
Clutter will distract you from focusing on your guitar playing. A nice clean and practical space will benefit your practice and writing sessions.

2 – Visibility
Make sure you guitar is in the room. Every time you walk in or out the room it needs to be visible.
“Out of sight is out of mind” If you can’t see the guitar it won’t remind you to play on it.

You always need to be reminded of your passion, because there are so many things that will distract you from it. There are always things that need to be done like admin tasks, errands, household chores, etc. They will keep you from playing as long as your guitar is out of sight. “Visibility” is the magic word here.

3 – Temptations
Make it difficult for yourself to not pick up that guitar. Put your favorite music sheets on a nice music stand somewhere in the room where it looks attractive and where you will be drawn to it.

Put a CD with a favorite song you want to learn on the music stand as well.

Put a picture of your favorite guitar player, singer songwriter or anything that will inspire you on your computer’s desktop.

Find a nice sweet spot for your guitar amp and effect pedals. Make sure they are ready to be rocked anytime you are in the mood.

4 – Reminders
Schedule your practice sessions. Write them on your wall calender, computer calender and calender of your mobile phone.

Write down reminders, favorite songs, licks or riffs you want to learn, favorite quotes that will inspire and motivate you to pick up that guitar.

5 – Details
If you have a bookshelf or bookcase in your room put your guitar books at eye level so they will be noticed.

Put guitar or music DVDs and CDs in sight. Not in a messy way but in a nice and practical way.

Make sure capo, bottleneck, picks, strings, tuner are easy accessible.

Put one or two guitar magazines on the table.

“Nothing pleases me more than to go into a room and come out with a piece of music. “ – Paul McCartney

photo by Karynsig Isn’t it great when you can just focus on guitar playing without distractions.

Isn’t it great when you can just focus on guitar playing without distractions.

Distractions are not only caused by Internet, TV and the people around you, but also from having too much stuff.

Too much gear (fx, pedals, etc.) or even thinking about gear will distract you from playing. Too much recording stuff, mixers and outboard effects will distract you from creating.

The last few weeks I got rid of a lot of stuff I haven’t used in over a year. I sold and gave away: Pickups, multi-effects, wires and pedals. I’m also busy scanning the tablature from my guitar magazines and books I will intend to use. The magazines and books will go away. It is great to know what you have and use what you need. I feel liberated.

I don’t say you need to lose every lovely piece of gear you have, but try keeping it to a minimum. Keep it simple. Get rid of what you don’t use. It makes life easier. It will give you piece of mind so there is only the music left to focus on whether you perform, compose, record or practice.

Wouldn’t it be great to simplify every aspect of guitar playing and feel free.

Having less gear also means you don’t have to worry about:

- maintaining your gear.
- carrying your gear.
- reading boring manuals.
- broken gear of parts.
- repairing your gear.
- wire problems or empty batteries.
- designing presets.
- losing presets.
- forgetting to bring certain gear with you to a gig.
- storage space (at home, on stage, in the studio).

Here are some useful steps to become a minimalist guitarist:

1 – Simplify gear. Get rid of gear you haven’t used for over a year (amps, cabinets, pedals, multi-effects, preamps, etc.), unless you are absolutely sure you are going to use it anytime soon.

2 – Less guitars. Get rid of guitars you never use. Sell them on E-bay or give it to someone who can really use it. Surprise a good friend or family member.

3 – Upload guitar magazines and tablature books. Scan all the good articles or tabs into your computer or laptop and give the magazines to someone else. Upload your tabs on Google Docs so you can reach them from anywhere you like.

4 – Minimal recording gear. Keep your recording gear as minimal as possible. Use a laptop, a sequencer and a small interface. Be effective and efficient. Be mobile.

5 – Keep recordings simple. Recording is about creating. Record a song in the least possible takes. Be the best you can be. Go for authenticity. Don’t lose yourself in editing. Keep your recordings as pure and live as possible.

6 – Get rid of rusty wires, worn picks & strings, anything useless and broken.

7 – Minimize your overall setup. Take the least possible guitars and equipment with you as possible wherever you are, wherever you go. Set yourself free at home and on stage.

8 – Essential guitar practice. Focus your guitar practice on what is necessary. Learn what you need to learn. Don’t goof around. When you practice you practice. Concentrate, play and breathe.

9 – Online music storage. For the advanced minimalist: Rip your CDs, save them on your laptop and Ipod. Give your CDs to music lovers. Save your music on an online storage www.Adrive.com so you can access your music from anywhere.

10 – Buy less. Love the minimal guitar lifestyle. Play and create.
When you buying something new, get rid of something else.

I appreciate your comments on this post. Thanx in advance.
Klaus Tol

Most of us want to work less. We want a four day workweek, a three day workweek or a four hour workweek. We all want to have more time to play guitar and to enjoy life to the fullest, but when it comes down to it I often see that people resist and make excuses.

Why? Because they don’t want to compromise. They don’t want to give up their stuff, their luxurious lifestyle for freedom.

People have become addicts of a consumerist society and choose materialism over freedom, materialism over happiness, materialism over spending real time with their children, friends and family, materialism over doing what they love most, materialism over risking.

Risking? Risking what? A life where they can’t afford a second car, a bigger TV, a bigger house, more guitars, more expensive equipment, more stuff. That’s not a risk, that is salvation.

Release yourself from an addictive mind. Let’s choose freedom over materialism. Let’s choose to do real things. Not buy things, but do things.

So what are those real things? Real things are: Creating something, learning, achieving goals, working out, having fun, playing guitar, practicing, writing lyrics and music, performing, etc.

A lot of times people say to me “I need good money to have fun”. I say “No you don’t”. You don’t need a lot of money to achieve your goals if you are creative, if you use your imagination and connect with people in a sincere way. Take the effort to try and just do before you say things are not possible.

My point is you need a shift in your thinking in order to work less and have more fun. You really don’t need to work 5 days out of 7 to pay the bills. We have been customized to do so. Let’s say we had 8 days in a week. We would probably think we needed to work 6 days or 7 days a week, because that is what society wants us to believe.

Isn’t it a coincidence that we all need to work from 9 to 5 to finish our business? No of course not. We have brought this upon ourselves. We make ourselves believe that we can’t change the situation we live in. We make ourselves believe that is the way it is.

Look beyond yourself, there is a whole new generation out there starting from zero who are now living their lives on their own terms. Yes it’s possible!

What would happen if you tried to work four days a week instead of five to begin with? With your ears and eyes open you would soon discover new opportunities, open doors to change, a new lifestyle and a new way of thinking. You would be forced to use your creative mind and make it work somehow.

You could start your own business or your own creative way to make money doing something you love. You could find something you would be passionate about. Gradually creating your own way of life.

With this new lifestyle you now got the time and energy to do things differently, effectively and more efficiently. These are 3 key essentials, because you don’t want to do more work than necessary. You don’t want to do work that can be done better, easier, faster, outsourced or not at all. Soon you will get the hang of it. This way of living and thinking will taste for more. Your imagination and creative mind will be running wild.

A lot of people think you need to be rich first before you can work less, but you really should be working less before you get rich. You need to live life now and do what you love most (not buy what you love most). Doing things makes you a happier person, not buying things.

You can build this life gradually by taking it step by step. Plan a new step every day of the week to get you going. Plan steps that will really change things, new steps that will lead you to an extraordinary life where you make the rules!

Here some tips to work less and live the good life:

1. Write down what kind of your work you would love to do.

2. Write down how much time you want to spend on the most important things in your life:
Family and friends, your work, playing guitar, working out, etc.

3. Write a plan with effective clear steps towards that life. One step each day of the week.

4. Start saving money to pay off your debts. Lose your credit-cards.

5. Start spending less money on buying stuff. Focus on doing not buying.

6. Start to work less, work something out with your boss, change jobs if necessary, start your own business.

7. Focus on priorities. Stop wasting your time on things that don’t matter. ( TV, TV, TV, Surfing the Internet, watching and reading the news every day, checking email every other minute, etc. )

8. Do something that would really change your life a year from now.

9. Start doing things effectively and efficiently. Use your imagination. Read books or blogs on this topic.

10. Start using your creative mind to turn things around to achieve your goal.

11. Do things differently. Don’t do things like everyone else. Don’t go with the flow. If you do what everyone does you get what everyone has.

12. Think outside of the box. Make a habit of doing things outside of the box.

13. If the steps towards your new life are hard and tough, change them so they are pleasurable and fun to do. You need to be passionate about it or create a passion for it.

14. Overcome fear of failure and success. Love your fear and it cannot drive you, push it away and it owns you.

Imagination is more important than knowledge – Albert Einstein

A few days ago I saw a great singer songwriter on TV. He was playing his repertoire, talking about his life and all the songs he had written over the years.

I was all ears and loved every minute of it. While listening to his wisdom and beautiful melodies something struck me.

It was one of those wake up calls when suddenly you can see things very clearly. I had a strong urge to change some things in my life again. I needed to get my priorities straight and get back to what is most important in my life. I have done so.

Sometimes with everything that life has to offer, you get lost or off track. You are distracted or tempted by things that look interesting and sound amazing at first. Before you know it you are in over your head. You taste, but end up tasting too much of it. It does not fulfill you anymore.

It does no longer match your identity. Times are changing and so are you. You grow, experience, learn many different things that can change the course of your life. You might become confused about your current situation. You might doubt your job, your lifestyle, the way you play guitar, the band you play in, the music you play, your role as a musician, what you need to practice, how you spend and manage your time, what you want in your life and what you don’t want in your life.

You might ask yourself: Is this the right path? Is this the way I want to continue? You can’t figure it out and you are too afraid to let go of it. You might have started out with something that has grown and grown bigger. You are attached to it for whatever reason. The bigness of it all will make it seem more important than it really is and that can be quite misleading.

The time you invest in something creates a certain value but at the same time it can become a burden.
Maybe your values have changed over time, you might have new dreams or you wanna change or adjust your lifestyle. Maybe you underestimated or overestimated the choices you made or you are just being busy without any sense.

When you find yourself in a situation like this, it can be difficult to find a real honest answer and make a decision about it.

What you should do is observe and listen. Open your ears and eyes to whatever is out there. Pick up signs. Be open to whatever comes your way. There will be a moment when somebody will tell you a story, you hear a song on the radio, you watch a documentary or something in real life will happen that leaves you with a clear answer. At that very moment you will know what to do.

Here are some ways to speed up that process, get you back on track and continue to being your true self:

1. Read stories written by people or about people who inspire you. Read books, blogs and magazines you love. Reading will expand your horizon. It can help you find a way out.

2. Listen to people who can be objective. People who are wise or honest in your opinion.

3. Do something different from what you normally do. Try it for a day, a weekend or a week.

4. Take a long walk outside where it’s quiet. Alone! ( Not to the mall. )

5. Meditate or take some time to relax. ( e.g. drinking tea without the distractions)

6. Write down your questions and worries on paper. Write down pros en cons. Write down your wishes and dreams. 43things.com Write down anything that comes to mind. When you write, things often become clearer.

7. Socialize with friends, family and strangers.

8. Be honest to yourself and others. Let go of your ego. Your ego will stand in the way of beautiful things, improvement and real growth.

9. Play or listen to the music you truly love.

10. Stop worrying about what others may think of you. Don’t let others decide for you.

11. Be fearless, be bold, be courageous to do what you think is best for you.

12. Don’t follow, but lead your own way. Even if it is a lonely way. It will be rewarding.

13. Make a decision. Let it cool for a week or 2. If you still feel it is the right thing to do, act on it.

14. If you make a mistake, learn from it. Don’t regret it. Move on. Better things will come. Every mistake is a lesson learned.

Sometimes you have to do what you don’t like to get to where you want to be. – Tori Amos
